WHAT ARE RHYMES

What Are Rhymes is a collaborative movement formed to give young people of this generation and beyond a voice to influence the music they hear on public radio. In my work with young girls who are survivors of Human Trafficking and often homeless, we see the effect music has on young people. From this work, we have developed a deep commitment and interest in working to decrease children’s consumption of explicit music and content. The youth of our day are becoming completely desensitized by music causing a loss of moral compass. Many of the rappers they idolize seem to have no concern for how their music directly impacts their listeners. Money is the bottom line, not human life. This problem goes beyond just a bottom line.

Music plays a major role in the socialization of adolescents and teens. The effect that explicit music, explicit rap lyrics and content have on children and teenagers, especially minority children is detrimental to their growth and socialization. What Are Rhymes has three strategic goals to accomplish its’ mission of decreasing young people’s exposure to explicit music.

 They are:
  1. Raise the awareness about the adverse impact of explicit music and content
  2. Stimulate meaningful policy change and corporate practices to limit young people's exposure to explicit music
  3. Increase research on the impact of explicit music and content

We hope you will join What Are Rhymes in our work.
